Define Success on Your Terms, Part 1

Blog #213

I’m going to go out on a limb here: I think we have lost perspective on what success looks like. We have abdicated this role to reality TV, big advertising, our peers, even our parents. Contrary to what our country’s media shares with us, I believe we are living in the most exciting and abundant times in history. Almost every data point confirms it, but we are not equipped with the knowledge of how to deal with this, and as a result, we strive for more – more stuff, more money, more food, more distractions, more information…..more, more, more. And still, there is an increasing number of people who are in debt, obese, in poor health, and in a general state of depression than ever before.

This two-part blog series will help you to identify your current strengths and possible areas for opportunities then explain how to use this information to begin defining which opportunities to pursue. Define Success

Okay, I can hear you saying, “Dude, I get it, but how does this apply to Solopreneurship and business?” If you are thinking of going out on your own, or if you are looking to increase the current level of engagement with your staff, you must first know what success looks like for you on an individual basis. You need to clearly know what you want and where you want to go. To do this, you may need to adjust how you look at success and then define that success on your own terms. Once you embrace this, it will become much easier to define what success looks like for you – not your neighbor or what is portrayed in TV commercials.

I have seen many people wrestle with this challenge. It is not at all uncommon for someone to realize they have never taken the time to review what success looks on their own terms. I have created a 60-item assessment specifically designed to help people start to think differently about what success looks like, for them. The scores from the assessment are added up then inserted into this Life Balance Wheel chart. The Life Balance Wheel

Assessment/Questionnaire Components

The four components of the assessment/questionnaire are:

  • Relationships
  • Professional
  • Resources
  • Health

Each component is broken down into three sub-sections. You can gain access to The Life Balance Wheel Assessment and The Aspiring Solopreneur Bonus Video by clicking this link: https://aspiringsolopreneur.com/tools-welcome/

The intention is to identify areas in which you are strong and areas with opportunities. For example, if your resources are strong, you have all the money and stuff you want, but your relationships stink, you likely aren’t happy. Conversely, if you have great relationships and enough money, but you hate your working environment, you may not feel very fulfilled. The Life Balance Wheel is a tool that helps you to recognize which parts of your life are working well and which parts need more attention. Once you know this, you will be able to begin defining what success looks like for you. Once you know where you want to go, you can start to dig in and build a plan to find your success!

Next week, we will discuss what to do once you have defined what success looks like for you.

Speaking of, defining success is covered in the beginning of my new book, The Aspiring Solopreneur: Your Start-Up Bible, which is available on Amazon in paperback, Kindle, or Audible formats.
